Calm Kitchen: Placemat

Skill Level: Beginner

I wanted to create a beginner friendly crochet pattern that worked up quickly, but also added something calming and beautiful to my busy kitchen and dining area. With two little boys running around, it also had to wear well and be very, very washable.

This placemat is made using cotton yarn, to hold up well when washed, and is just the touch of calm and cute I needed to help my space feel a bit more put together (and somehow a bit less frenzied - yarn magic?). I’m looking forward to adding in more fun kitchen patterns in the future - dishcloths, tea towels and more!

Featuring the lovely crunch stitch with some rows of half double crochet for variety, this project is fun and easy - and a great way to learn a new stitch if you’ve never tried the crunch stitch before!

Below you’ll find all the details for this pattern, as well as a link to the tutorial video to help if you need it. Happy hooking!

Dimensions:

Finished Placemat Dimensions: 11.5” tall x 18” wide

Gauge: 9 rows, 8 crunch stitches = 4”

To adjust the size of your finished placemat:
We’ll be working this placemat so that we’re working the side/height edge of it. You can make your finished placemat taller by adding additional chains to your foundation chain, as long as it’s in a multiple of 2 + 1. A longer starting chain will equate to a taller placemat!

To make your placemat longer or narrower width-wise, add or remove rows when you get to the large “repeat section” for rows 10-66. Adding or removing rows in this section will add or remove width to your finished placemat.
