Granny Stitch Triangle Shawl

Skill Level: Beginner

This shawl was made with Hobbi Horizon, Color 19, 5mm Hook

Triangle shawls are probably my favorite thing to crochet! They work up quickly (and I find that super satisfying), make great gifts, are versatile and are something I wear way more than I thought I would.

I’ve made triangle shawls in sparkly Christmas colored fingering weight yarn to wear as a dressy, festive scarf (worn with the center point down the front), and in washable acrylics for tossing on when I need a portable blanket around the house. However you decide to wear and use your shawl, I hope that you find this pattern helpful!

This post doesn’t technically contain a pattern, I suppose. But, it does contain the instructions needed to crochet your own granny stitch triangle shawl from start to finish!

Instead of suggesting yarn and providing a specific row count, I’m providing below the written instructions for this beginner friendly shawl - the yarn and number of rows will be left to your own wonderful imagination! You can use any yarn (and recommended hook for that yarn) you’d like, and you can make your shawl as small or large as you’d like. The pattern contains a few setup rows, and after that is a simple one-row repeat that you can continue with until your project is the size you desire.

A YouTube tutorial is linked below, in case you’re a more visual learner or would like a little additional help. If you are interested in the yarn used in my samples, just check out the description under the photo for the specific brand/color and hook that I used for that particular project.

A note about the start of the pattern: You can begin your triangle shawl by creating a magic ring OR by chaining five, and then slip stitching into your first chain to create a loop to work into. Both methods will work wonderfully, however after making many shawls with the magic ring, I’ve decided to start mine with the chain 5 method going forward. Most of my shawls have survived with no issues using the magic ring, but I’ve found that when I’m using a “slippery” yarn (like Caron Cloud Cakes), or a yarn that breaks easily, there’s a chance that the magic ring will unravel a bit. Just something to keep in mind when starting your project, but do whatever you prefer.

Crochet Triangle Shawl using Lion Brand Mandala Bonus Bundle Yarn in the Color Mouth

Pattern Skills:

Here are the skills you’ll need to know (or can learn from my tutorial video) to complete this shawl:

  • Chain

  • Slip Stitch

  • Double Crochet

This shawl was created with Lion Brand Mandala Bonus Bundle yarn int he color Meowth, with a 5mm crochet hook

And here’s the pattern!

Please note that in this and all of my patterns, US Stitch Terms are used!

Pattern Abbreviations:

ch(s) = Chain(s)

st(s) = Stitch(es)

sk = Skip

sp = Space

dc = Double Crochet

tch = Turning Chain

Create a loop by chaining 5, and slip stitching back into the first chain OR by creating a magic ring.

Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). Into the loop (or magic ring) work 3 dc, ch 3, dc. Ch 1 and work 1 final dc into the loop.

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), turn. Into first ch 1 sp work 3 dc, ch 1. Into the ch 3 sp (center point of shawl), work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc. ch 1, and work 3 dc in the last ch 1 sp. ch 1, and work a final dc in the 3rd chain of your tch 4.

Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), turn. Working down the side of shawl, work 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch 1 sp. In the ch 3 sp (center point of shawl), work 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc. Along the next side of the shawl, work 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch 1 sp. Work 1 final dc in the 3rd ch of your tch 4.

Repeat row 3 until your project is the size you desire.

And there you have it! A beautiful shawl that works up quickly and is so satisfying to create!
