The Grit Stitch (two versions)

The Grit Stitch is a wonderful, beginner-friendly stitch that can be used in a wide range of projects! From blankets, shawls and scarves to hand towels, dishcloths and placemats - there is really no end to the amount of uses for this adorable stitch.
There are two versions of the Grit stitch, and I’ll be covering here how to crochet them both!
The “plain” Grit Stitch is an easy stitch using only single crochets, and is a simple one-row-repeat (pictured above at left).
The “fancy” Grit Stitch is worked up nearly identically to its “plain” sister, but uses both single AND double crochet stitches (pictured above at right). It should be noted that the “Fancy Grit Stitch” is also often called the “Suzette Stitch”.
Below you’ll find the written instructions for these two stitches, as well as a video tutorial that shows how to complete them both, that I hope will be helpful if you find yourself in need of some extra guidance.
How To Crochet The (Plain) Grit Stitch:
Create a foundation chain of any length you desire, in a multiple of 2 + 1. (So any even number, + 1 extra chain)
Row 1: Work a single crochet in the third stitch from your hook. Skip 1 chain, and work 2 single crochets in the next chain. For the rest of this row, repeat the same pattern: skip 1 chain, and work 2 single crochets in the next chain. When you have two chains remaining, skip one and work just 1 single crochet in the last chain.
Row 2: Chain 1, and turn your work. Work a single crochet in the 1st stitch. Skip 1 stitch, and work 2 single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat that same pattern across your row: Skip one stitch, and work 2 single crochets in the next stitch. When you reach the end of your row, you will skip one stitch and work 1 final single crochet into the turning chain from the row below.
Repeat row 2. Row 2 is your “pattern repeat row”. You’ll repeat row 2 until your project has reached it’s desired length.
How To Crochet The (Fancy) Grit Stitch:
Create a foundation chain of any length you desire, in a multiple of 2 + 1. (So any even number, + 1 extra chain)
Row 1: Work a double crochet in the third chain from your hook. Skip 1 chain, and in the next chain work both a single crochet AND a double crochet. Repeat that same pattern across row one: Skip 1 chain, and in the next work a single crochet and a double crochet. When you have two chains remaining, you’ll skip 1 chain, and work just 1 single crochet in the last chain.
Row 2: Chain 1, and turn your work. Work a double crochet in the first stitch. Skip 1 stitch, and work a single crochet and a double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat that same pattern across your row: skip 1 stitch, and work 1 single crochet and 1 double crochet in the next stitch. When you reach the end of your row, you’ll skip 1 stitch, and you’ll work 1 final single crochet into your turning chain from the row below.
Repeat row 2. Row 2 is your “pattern repeat row”. You’ll repeat row 2 until your project has reached it’s desired length.
